Author Jamie Ford will be signing at The King’s English Bookshop on Thursday, February 19, at 7 p.m., with his debut novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
A World War II Romeo and Juliet, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is a touching story inextricably bound to the fears of the 1940s. Ford writes beautifully of the coming of age of Henry Lee, a Chinese American, and his first love Keiko Okabe, a Japanese American, who is sent away to an internment camp along with her family and the rest of the Japanese population of Seattle. Racism, war-time propoganda, and bitter family histories separate these two wonderful characters, who refuse to give in to societal pressures but lose each other all the same. A lovely read and a much-needed reminder of the terrible treatment of the Japanese in America during World War II.
