Author Update | Shannon & Dean Hale

February 13, 2008

Last night was quite possibly the funniest author events I’ve ever had the pleasure to organize and attend. Shannon and Dean Hale, in the store for First Kiss (Then Tell), had the crowd practically in tears. They deserve their own show. Maybe even a reality show! I would watch it, and I don’t even have TV. Rather than attempting to describe it, here are a few highlights from the evening:

Money Quote: [Shannon describing the strange coincidence that the illustrator of their graphic novel rapunzel’s revenge, due out this fall, is also named Hale] “When I go on tour and people ask me about it, I tell them that Dean and Nathan are my two husbands. [audience laughs] And people believe me!”

Thing I Didn’t Know About Shannon: Before she was able to write full-time, she was an Instructional Designer [I’m not even sure what that is] and held computer trainings for corporations.

Thing I Didn’t Know About Dean: He writes absurdist horror stories on his blog,

Best Anecdote of the Night: At their wedding, Shannon and Dean performed an improv skit in the form of a Telenovela (Spanish soap-opera, for those of us who don’t know), entirely in Spanish!

Here are some pictures. Dean’s shirt is covered with “bloody” handprints because it’s his Intramural Zombie Hunting League shirt, which he wore to counteract the extreme girliness of being published (for the first time no less!) in a first kiss anthology.

Congratulations to Kennedy (in the very last picture), who won our drawing for a free copy of First Kiss (Then Tell)! Tomorrow we’ll be posting our favorite First Kiss stories. Come by and submit your own in the comments!

A Good Day

February 12, 2008

Today is a Good Day for so many reasons. The sun is finally out here in blizzardy Salt Lake, and it’s 42 degrees instead of the biting 20 we’ve been stuck at for weeks. Theoretically we’ve got another six weeks of winter, but the little birds outside my office window don’t seem to think much of Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction.

This also mean that for the first time since probably Dorothy Allred Solomon, we’ll have nice weather for an event! That’s right folks, there is no good reason not to come out for Shannon and Dean Hale’s fabulous Valentine’s reading tonight.

Then there’s the fact that they’ve announced release dates for Stephenie Meyer’s two new books, The Host (a sci-fi novel that you’re all going to love — I know, I’ve read it!) and Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the Twilight series: Tuesday May 6th and Saturday August 2nd, respectively. Top Secret Plans are in motion for Breaking Dawn, which those of you on our email list will find out about early next week — keep an eye on your inboxes! You can pre-order either of these (and there are SO MANY reasons why you should, I’m not going to even try and list them) right now by emailing us. Go ahead, click that link, you know you want to!

And the final reason that today is a Good Day is that it’s one day closer to all of the other fabulous events we’ve got planned. Have I mentioned I love my job? Oh, I have? Well, I guess it must be true.

No Job Too Big (or Small)

February 7, 2008

Being the Marketing Manager at an independent business means that my job varies hugely from day to day. For example, yesterday I was busy sending out press releases to local Food Editors for our signing next Friday night with Marguerite Henderson.

Today, it meant craft-time with lots of construction paper, markers, glitter pens and tape, decorating a box for our drawing next Tuesday night with Shannon and Dean Hale! If you’ve somehow managed not to find out about this, here’s the skinny:

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12th, Shannon and Dean Hale will be here at the store for a special Valentine’s reading and signing for First Kiss (Then Tell). It’s a great collection of first kiss stories, all true, from close to 30 authors. Shannon and Dean both tell their respective (and highly entertaining) versions of their first kiss.

We decided that this is an opportunity too good to pass up, and are going to do a drawing for a signed copy of First Kiss. Entrants can submit their own story for the drawing either by email, in a comment to this post, or in the store. (Though keep in mind, you have to be present to win.) I’m hoping to publish some of the best first kiss confessions right here on the blog on Valentine’s Day — my own included (I’m not saying it’ll be one of the best, just that I feel obliged to include it — they tell me that transparency in business is a good thing). Can’t you just wait?

Back to me half an hour ago, covered in bits of pink and red construction paper. That box deserves to be full of first kiss stories — it’s a masterpiece of Valentine’s paraphernalia! Like I said, no job too big or small.
